This formula of cheesy dialogue, tenuous plot and gratuitous explosions was enough to see the Wheelman movie canned - perhaps the game should've followed suit. That a big-name star who's so passionate about gaming has put his name to such a poor title is a shame, especially since The Chronicles of Riddick games were such a resounding success. Ignoring the lack of a jump button or cover system (automatic or manual), aiming at enemies is unresponsive and wobbly, making it difficult to shoot even the explosive barrels that most of your enemies decide to huddle round in nearly every fire fight. When you get out of the car, things get a whole lot worse. It's possible, for example, to go on a quasi-killing spree (remember you can't actually kill anyone you want), get as many police cars chasing you as possible and then just drive round and round in a fairly small circle, with the authorities seemingly incapable of doing anything to stop you. The laughable AI, however, is so beset with such inane levels of abject cretinism that the enjoyment you get from pulling off these moves is shortlived. Physically impossible, but surprisingly satisfying, abilities like the cyclone (spinning the car 180° so you can shoot the enemies behind you in slow motion) can make you feel suitably badass. Rockstar's hit, and there are times when the game's over-the-top silver screen nonsense starts to become enjoyable. Originally a Vin Diesel movie tie-in, Wheelman is understandably going for a more cinematic action experience than Every street and every pedestrian (none of which you can wantonly kill - for shame Mr Diesel) look near identical, and there are only a handful of different cars available to drive. This appreciation of the medium almost makes it surprising that his latest movie/videogame tie-in is so woefully crap. ![]() Between crushing melons in his pecs and shooting lightning from his abs, he even manages to find the time to foster a World of Warcraft addiction. NVR products are standalone devices using a Linux operating system which is known to be rock-solid and crash free, and designed to be operate 24/7 and maintain system security with user account access permissions. Also, computers can be unreliable and crash, potentially leaving you with no recorded video. Most likely, you wouldn’t be able to use that computer for personal use as it would be bogged down processing video from high resolution IP network cameras. However, this kind of processing will demand a lot from the computer. SmartPSS is our computer software program that allows PCs to view and record IP cameras. After all the five tracks are won, the player advances to another level, with longer tracks, better opponents and higher stakes.įew other features the game comes with are at a gameplay level. In the first version, the fourth place was counted as a qualifying place as well, but things changed with the second version. Players have to be placed on the first three places to pass to the next level. The split-screen multiplayer alone makes this a better game than the original Road Rash! It runs pretty damn well too, even if you do only have a small bit of the screen to make. A good friend of mine and I would play the hell out of this game back in the day. What really made this a firm favorite of mine as a kid was the multiplayer. You can come off your bike which like in all the other games is annoying as you can go flying a million miles way of your bike! Biking And Fighting With Friends I liked this and being able to use chains and clubs is a lot of fun. As well as watching out for cars and going off the road, you get to fight as well. That is because once you win a race in each area, you have to do another set of races and the difficulty spike is pretty severe her. Better bikes have a speed boost that you can use and you certainly want one of these bikes sooner than later. The idea is that you make more and more money so that you can get a better bike. When you start your game, you are given a small amount of money which you use to purchase a bike. The levels do all kind of look the same, but I will not hold that against the game as this is a game where you cannot really take your eyes of the road anyway or you will crash. The game also features a pretty badass soundtrack that is perfectly fitting for the racing action. I guess, you could argue that not a great deal has changed here, but I am happy with that. The third game in the series went for a more “realistic” kind of style, but with Road Rash 2 they have kept it the same style as the first game. It is basic stuff by today's standards, but it is a massive amount of fun. You have to win a race in each area and you then progress to a more challenging one. You will be going to five different areas in Road Rash 2 which are, Hawaii, Arizona, Tennessee, Alaska, and Vermont. You do this by going around the USA and taking part in a series of illegal road races. The goal of the game is to be the best biker around. However, if you time it just right, you can snatch away their weapons and use them yourself! Watch out for nasty players carrying spiked bats and chains. Sound easy? Not! You face a field of 14 other racers, all determined to punch, slap, and kick you off the road if they get the chance. Finish in the top third on each track and you advance to the longer, and more treacherous, upper levels. There are five levels (each with five tracks) set in different parts of the United States - Hawaii, Alaska, Vermont, Tennessee, and Arizona. Your only controls are the brakes, throttle, and attack buttons. You control a high-powered racing bike from a sharp third-person, behind-the-bike perspective. Road Rash 2 plays exactly like its predecessor. Tired of the usual video game fare and looking for a driving simulation that really flies? Then tighten your chin strap and take this game for a spin! Corey shouted a couple things at them and said he would be back. When corey lost a couple guys were ribbing him over it as he was breaking his cue down. Dallas made one of the best jump shots I've ever seen after Corey played a safe that was just as strong as the jump. Really? It's amazing how often some of us fanatics cross paths and never know each other.Ĭorey was put out of the tourney by Dallas West I think. I'll never forget Bucky shouting how absurd these allegations were while wearing his black leather VNEA Masters jacket from the year before. Then up comes Bucky Bell to argue our case in his typical woofing style. Turned out they were out in the hall protesting to the Tournament Directors that there was no way we could be in the Open Division with Master players like Bucky Bell on our team. Shortly, we noticed the entire opposing team had disappeared, no where to be seen. It was in the VNEA Nationals I think and we were pounding the opposing team game after game. One year circa 1997 or so I had the privilege of playing as a sub on one of those great Airway Vegas teams (Gary Spaeth, Frank Ruby, Jason Miller, Bucky Bell). A compilation of the most successful tracks from both halves of the album would have made for a slightly stronger effort. But with Keys, she has, in a sense, found her way home. The lyrics to “Best of Me” epitomize the album’s loose musical spirit: “We can live on the air/Do you understand?” Early in her career, Keys was lazily lumped into the neo-soul genre, often compared to predecessors like Erykah Badu and Jill Scott. Coleįreed from whatever pressure she may have felt to produce pop hits in the past, Alicia Keys exudes an effortlessness throughout her ambitious double album, Keys. A similar aesthetic extends to “Wait Til You See My Smile,” where Keys jumps ably between a sultry lower register and an artfully strained high while synths and strings pile up to “Purple Rain” proportions. The best moments on the album come early, with the clear standout being the single “Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart.” There, some retro synth work lends a funky backdrop for Keys’s breathy vamping, alternating disco-diva choruses with Prince-worthy verses. The Element of Freedom strikes an appealing, somewhat original aesthetic that succumbs to neither of the two clichés that dominate neo-soul releases: It’s not a stodgily reverential retro fest, nor is it a formulaic synthesis of smooth vocals and trendy hip-hop beats. And when Keys’s signature piano is traded for acoustic guitar, the result is neo-soul formlessness that, generously, could be described as “mood music.” Sal Cinquemani Still, those two closing tracks’ spare arrangements of piano and vocal feel too conservative for their chosen subject matter. At times, Keys’s optimism about the state of the world feels naïve, like an echo from an era when “hope and change” felt attainable, as on the dreamy “Authors of Forever,” with its persistent refrain of “it’s alright.” But that sense of displaced positivity is offset by the directness with which Keys sings about police violence on “Perfect Way to Die” and so-called “essential workers” on “Good Job,” whose sense of hope is tinged by deep despair. Like the most effective political pop, Alicia Keys’s seventh album, Alicia, couches its socio-political observations in a personal context, unspooling to reveal the interconnectedness of its subject’s view of both the world and herself. Dre, Bruno Mars, Jamie xx, and Frank Ocean all earn production or songwriting credits, though most of their efforts end up emerging 100-percent Keys: slow, methodical, and rewardingly quiet. In addition to Minaj and Maxwell, Rodney Jerkins, Babyface, Dr. But if Girl on Fire is a family affair, her family is vast and expensive. Slightly more successful is the babble cameo by the singer-songwriter’s toddler son, Egypt, during the outro to “When It’s All Over,” a deep and resonant groove with muted breakbeats and squelching synth counterpoints to Keys’s low-end piano chords. Nothing if not magnanimous, Keys lets husband Swizz Beatz step in to co-produce the drumline-accompanied “New Day,” an unfortunately trite motivational anthem that gets compelling only during the coda when Swizz chops up the beat and Keys’s piano lines into pulp. Of the album’s 12 songs, only the title track seems like a disruptive capitulation to market demands: “Girl on Fire” invites Nicki Minaj to spit game atop Billy Squier’s “Big Beat,” while Keys majestically howls over repeated power chords lifted straight from her “Empire State of Mind” playbook. Matthew ColeĮditor’s Note: This article was originally published on June 1, 2021.Īlicia Keys’s fifth album, Girl on Fire, is less a portrait of the singer’s womanhood at a crossroads than it is another extension of a career spent predominantly navigating straight down the middle of the road. Keys is one of the few R&B performers who realizes that a strong melody and a well-structured beat are both, fundamentally, exercises in composition, and she approaches both aspects of her songcraft with the attention to detail that her pop-classicist chops would suggest. Here we had an exceptionally skilled performer attempting an unusually sophisticated take on urban pop. Something about the album made it more exciting than any number of more accomplished debuts. Less a masterpiece than a promissory note, Alicia Keys’s Songs in A Minor-which celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this year-signaled the emergence of a genuine talent. |
